Newsletter – March/April

The second of the collaborative seminars of the Gamani Corea Foundation (GCF) and the Sri Lanka Economic Association (SLEA) was held on April 23, 2026, at the GCF. 

The research, “Feasibility, Benefits, and Challenges in Establishing a Special Economic Zone in the Northern Region of Sri Lanka” was presented by Professor OG Dayaratna-Banda (PhD) Senior Professor in Economics & Professor Malini Balamayuran (PhD), Senior Lecturer in Political Science, from the University of Peradeniya.

In attendance, were policy makers representing government institutions, academics, and private sector.

A joint GCF- SLEA Seminar, the first of a series of collaborative seminars, was held on February 27th, at the GCF.

The research, “Export Competitiveness in South and Southeast Asia: A Sectoral Panel Data”, was presented by Dr. Achinthya Koswatte, and can be accessed through the following link

The GCF held its first joint session with the Sri Lanka Forum of University Economists (SLFUE) at the GCF on March 6th.

In discussion was Emeritus Chairperson of the GCF, Dr. Nimal Sanderatne’s monograph “Development: Not By Economics Alone” that highlights the factors beyond economics, that contribute to the upliftment and success of a country.

The GCF’s  founder member, Emeritus & former chairman, Deshamanya Dr. Godfrey Gunatilleke, celebrated his 100th birthday, on April 10th.  

Dr. Gunatilleke was also close colleague and dear friend of Dr. Gamani Corea.

 The directors, members and staff of the GCF, celebrated the Sinhala & Tamil New Year, with a traditional breakfast, at the Horton Lodge.
